Cam-chain, guides & tensioner have to be in perfect operating condition, both for obtaining full performance and overall reliability.
An incorrectly tensioned chain means the valve timing will not be at its optimum, worn guides could allow the chain to jump, with the potential for catastrophic failure allowing valves to collide with the piston crown, effectively wrecking the engine.
All this can be avoided with timely servicing and/or replacement of the aforementioned components with new parts probably when the cam-chain itself needs replacing.
