The crankshaft/con-rod/piston assembly is the most stressed area of the engine. The various components that make up the assembly, especially piston-rings and bearings, become worn, leading to reduced power and a smoky exhaust (piston rings) and reduced oil pressure (bearings) and the potential for a catastrophic failure if not addressed; such a failure can severely damage the engine, not a happy thought on a machine like the VFR model this component fits!
