Overhauling the gear-selector assembly will have a better outcome when as many of the wear and wear-prone parts as possible are replaced. Interfacing used parts with new will lead to premature wear of the new parts, and a less positive gear changes.
It is also important that the gear-change foot control is also inspected carefully for fulcrum and pivot points wear, play and/or damage.
