The hard-working camshafts, lifters, shims, valves, valve-springs, Cam-Chain tensioners and Cam-Chain guides are better being renewed than reused if there are any signs of wear or damage, when rebuilding the cylinder-heads or complete engine. The wonderful V-twin engine this component suits is worth sorting out correctly.

    Cam chains, XL1000 Varadero

    reviewer: Ole Sandgaard Andersen

    (5 Stars) - Friday, April 17, 2020
My Varadero has done 191000 km, so time for big service (192000 km). Had kept an eye on the cam marks the last times I checked the valves, but this time I thought that they'd moved to much, so I ordered two new chains and what should be use for the replacement. As expected to original Honda parts, the new chains seemed high quality. When comparing the new ones with the old, there wasn't much difference, only when bending them sideways, the old ones could bend more than the new ones. But when taking the old ones out, I could exactly get them free over the camsproket, but I couldn't get the new ones on the sproket without loosening the camshaft. And another thing; I loosened the cam tensioners two turns to slacken the old chains, but with the new ones they only tightened three quarters. Seen in the back of wisdom, I think I should have replaced the chains at the last big service, 168000 km, I think the difference was to big now.
