This One Way Clutch is the OEM item for VT750C and VT700c 1983 to 1987(?). It is intended to reduce the risk of locking the rear wheel on these shaft-drive motorcycles if it is necessary to change down through the gear-box at high speeds. I cannot be sure whether it does actually perform this function because I tend to increase engine revs when I change to a lower gear at high speed and then reduce revs after the lower gear is engaged. The performance of the one-way clutch is dependent on the One-way clutch inner and the one-way clutch outer being in good condition (i.e. wear is within service limit tolerances on both these components). Wear beyond service limits will prevent the one-way clutch from engaging and hence clutch slip will occur and will also cause wear to occur on the clutch, one way itself. Given that all relevant parts are within service limits, fitment of a new Clutch, one way will enable the bike to perform to design intent.
