Part of rebuilding an engine should include a close inspection, and if necessary, the reconditioning of the crankshaft/con-rod assembly; this will improve performance, reduce oil consumption and lead to a smoother and quieter engine - it is a highly specialised job and usually very expensive. It is sometimes easier (and possibly less expensive in some cases) to replace it with a brand new assembly.
