Renewing the old Air Filter foam inline with the suggested service interval requirements will help protect the engine internals as well as helping the fuel/air mixture to remain constant. When replacing the filter though, it is worth inspecting the other components that make up the air filter assembly for damage and degradation, renewing any suspect parts that may damage or impede the correct airflow.
