During the course of an engine overhaul, or just a cam chain replacement, please check this item carefully, as it takes a lot of punishment, and eventually loses some of its 'springiness'. If you have any doubts, replacement can often be more cost effective than allowing a worn item to compromise the new cam-chain and chain tension assembly.
