First launched in Japan in 1978, the CM125, the CM an abbreviation in this instance for Custom, used a de-tuned version of the then new overhead camshaft engine used in the Honda CB125T announced a year earlier.
The engine with a single carburettor produced 12bhp @ 9,500rpm, but still gave a surprising turn of speed, the midrange performance quite punchy for a 125, and totally in keeping with it’s custom styling.
The custom model outsold the sports version in just about every market, and was in production long after the CB125T had been deleted from the Honda line up.
Production ceased at the turn of the century, after an impressive 22 year run, with few changes made to the original winning formula.
Interestingly these models are still being produced in China under different names, demonstrating a good design and concept will carry on selling, especially at budget prices, and into countries that favour the 125cc licensing laws.
