Introduced as a more powerful upgrade from the DT250 and DT360 models, and although not much faster, the DT400 was blessed with prodigious (for a two stroke) amounts of torque and easily became one of the company’s most successful street scramblers, or trail bikes, as they were by now being called. The model proved popular both in Europe and the vital USA market.
The torque and benign power band combined with good handling, curtesy of the mono-shock chassis, made the machine easy to ride and control but still with enough performance to satisfy the more experienced rider.
The DT400 became a best seller for Yamaha and today still makes a great classic trail machine
