I haven’t used the dowel pin yet as I am trying to collect all of the parts for a complete rebuild. The pin appears to be a quality part that should serve me well for my rebuild

Backfire suggests to early ignition, you should check a manual, which is essential to work on this..

I've set the points timing as I think they're supposed to be. No valves on this 2 stroke.
