There are many compelling reasons to replace the old air filter element: Correct running, not too rich due to a blocked filter causing petrol to 'wash' off the oil in the cylinder and contaminate the oil in the sump; engine damage caused by destructive particulate pieces of road grit to enter the engine.
While you are in this area of the machine, check all the other related components for damage. The airbox itself, is it cracked? Check also the induction tubes, various hoses and ancillary parts for wear and/or damage.
