Replacement of the air filter element in line with the recommended service schedule will ensure your engine will not suffer a reduction in performance, as the carburettor/throttle body tries to cope with a dirty clogged up filter.
Also check carefully all of the other components that make up the air filter assembly for heat and vibration stress cracks, general damage and poor sealing - nothing wears an engine faster than unfiltered air allowing micro particles to cause havoc to the cylinder bore!
