When overhauling the cylinder-head/valve train assembly, replacing as many of the wear items as possible with new parts will simplify the reassembly and subsequent adjustments required to set up the valve-timing and clearances correctly.
Check also the valve guides for wear? The most common cause for smoke from the exhaust on start-up. If the head has to be removed consider using new cylinder-head bolts when reassembling as the old ones naturally "stretch" when torqued down.
Performance will be returned to factory-fresh levels and the engine will run more smoothly and with less mechanical top-end "chatter".
