Fuel tanks can often be the most difficult item to refurbish when restoring a modern-classic motorcycle.
It is not so much the exterior finish that is difficult, although that isn't easy, it is the inside that can cause real headaches. Paint residue that has turned into varnish, general gunge, and even worse, heavy internal rust that can render what looks like a half decent tank into a lump of scrap metal. Easy and possibly less expensive to buy a brand new tank already painted with a perfectly clean interior.
