It is so important that these valve cotters (collets) are renewed with brand new items when reassembling the engine. Reusing the old parts may lead to gas leakage or even engine failure, allowing the valve to bounce into the top of the piston or tangle up with the other valve!

It is good policy to replace the valve, valve cotters and valve stem seals at the same time.
