Raging Bull – Ducati's Monster

Literally part of the language of motorcycling, the Ducati Monster is not simply synonymous with the legendary Bologna manufacturer, it has also been attributed by many as keeping the company afloat.

Justifiably famous for its V-twin machines (or L-twin as Ducati call them), Ducati's desire to expand and make profit for further investment was almost wholly down to the unprecedented (and largely unexpected) success of the Monster series.

Styled by Miguel Angel Galluzzi, the original M900 (plus 400, 600 and 750 siblings) had all the surging aggression of a raging bull and eased itself into both the emerging naked class of machines as well as a larger demographic of riders who may never have considered a Ducati before.

Previously the preserve of older enthusiasts and those that shunned other manufacturers, the Monster attracted younger riders - as well as a large number of women - to the brand.

With an exposed trellis type ladder frame based on the iconic 851 Superbike and honed by no less than Ducati icon Fabio Taglioni, the bike was a kind of "parts bin special" drawing components from many bikes in the range and achieved a remarkable run of success from launch in 1993 until the current day with over 300,000 units built… so far!

At times accounting for two thirds of Ducati production, the range of Monster machines are a prime example of a simple idea done well that has been a cash cow (or bull) for over three decades.
