CR93 RACE VERSION

info

Probably on e of the most exotic and beautiful machines ever to leave the gates of the Honda factory the CR93 changed the face of 125cc motorcycle road racing when announced in 1962. Based on the RC143 Grand Prix machines, the four valve head 180 degree twin produced 20bhp@11500 rpm. Accurate valve timing achieved by the use of a gear train drive to the double overhead camshafts. The engine though could be revved safely to 13000rpm when required.

Over 80 models were produced by the factory, earlier types having a twin sided single leading shoe brake, later types having a single sided twin leading shoe set up.
To put it quite simply, if you raced to win in the 125cc class, then this was the only machine to be on! A good rider could even get up amongst the points in Grand Prix racing, and occasionally beating works machinery, especially in the Isle Of man, where Honda’s four stroke reliability, and not losing power like the hot running two strokes over this gruelling event.

An interesting fact is that this engine was designed by a Honda engineer called Suzuki, no he was not related to the other Suzuki!

The 127kg machine was quite heavy for that class, but was still able to top 102mph and utterly dominated the short-circuit scene until 1970, when the Yamaha YAS1 took over the mantle, but no one who has ever listened to the CR93 on full chat can ever forget that superb exhaust note or that beautiful twin cylinder jewel of an engine!
