NN50MD GYRO 1984 (E) USA

info

Introduced by Honda in 1982 to the Japanese home market, and although going through some evolutionary changes is still available today, but today using a V-matic four-stroke engine. The idea though is not Japanese but British, a similar concept being launched by the Ariel Motorcycle Company in the U.K in the early 1970’s.

The Honda Gyro’s name is actually an acronym for ‘Great Your Recreation Original’. Obviously something was lost in translation.
The Gyro featured a ‘one touch parking lock mechanism’ to lock the scooter while parked. Gyro did not use a CVT (continuously variable) transmission but instead used a 2-speed automatic transmission.
