Honda SS50 information

Honda SS50

First launched in 1970, the SS50 was a delight to behold, with long slim ‘race style tank, complimented, on some models, by the ‘bum stop’ on the short racing seat. Telescopic forks, a gorgeous Hi-Line exhaust with heat shield, taken from the earlier CL version, and a superb range of new ‘Candy’ metallic paint finishes made this the best looking 50ccc sports bike on the market, and with an overhead camshaft engine, the only four stroke as well.

Learner licensing rules in most of Europe allowed 16 year olds, and in some countries 14 year olds, to ride 50cc ‘Motorised bicycles’. So long as they had pedals anything went, and this SS50 with five speed box and in some countries, a 6.2ps engine was developed to take full advantage.

This was in essence a regular Honda SS50 sports with the legal requirement of pedals, one of which folded back to make perfectly acceptable correctly positioned footrests.
The regular SS50’s were still being produced as regular motorcycles, but it is the ‘Moped’ type that command the highest collector prices, with the five speed box of course.
