Subject: Re: spark plug thread
i find the threads on the right sparkplug hole are crossthreaded will i have to strip the head to carry out a repair ?cd175a5 1978, thanks.
It is technically possible to do so, but inevitably will incure some risk of leaving debris within the combustion chamber.
If I was doing this job I would :
1) Turn the engine over to firing stroke/both valves closed/piston rising (not tdc)
2) After obtaining correct helicoil and fitting kit for spark plug thread size, drill damaged plug hole, tap thread, fit helicoil and tap/punch tail from end of helicoil.
3) Using vacuum cleaner with a reduction pipe on the end of cleaner pipe (8mm dia air line pipe for example)place through plug hole and vacuum out combustion chamber
4) for good measure, blow compressed air through plug hole and vacuum out again
If no experience of helicoiling I would'nt attempt it, and personally would remove head to remove risk of damaging engine from any leftover swarf/debris still in combustion chamber
