Suzuki GT750 1972 J USA E03

Initially launched in 1971, and put into full production a year later this iconic flagship was really nothing special at all! The three cylinder two stroke was water-cooled, a first for any Japanese road bike, and gave a very average 67hp @ 6500rpm, this on a machine weighing 15kg heavier than the Kawasaki Z1! The bore and stroke were identical to the T500, so this was really a water-cooled T500 engine with an extra cylinder. The handling was poor even by standards of the day, and the four-leading shoe 200mm-drum brake struggled to haul up nearly 250kg of motorcycle. This was helped in part by the introduction of disc braking, at least in dry weather, if it was wet, an anchor may have been more effective!

So not the greatest ‘super-bike’ of it’s time, yet no other machine holds as much affection with their owners than the ‘kettle’ as it is known in the U.K, or ‘Water Buffalo’ in the USA and ‘Waterbottle’ in Australia. The owners clubs around the World are vociferous in their praise for their ‘Kettles’. The classics values are going up and up, and despite horrendous corrosion problems. Especially areas like the seat pan, over 90% of all the GT750’s made are still on the road and the majority in superb to concourse condition!

It would be fair to say that no other Japanese classic has such a strong and loyal following as does the GT750, ask any GT750 owner!

The model ran from 1972 until 1977, when it was replaced with one of the finest and well engineered 750’s of all time, the Suzuki DOHC GS750 ‘Four’,
