Yamaha XJ550 brake caliper piston & seal kit, Wednesday, February 6, 2008

The kit consists of a machined piston, wrapped in a rust preventive paper, two rubber piston seals and a sachet of hydraulic grease. Having thoroughly cleaned the caliper, including the grooves for the seals (remove any corrosion in the grooves by gently scrubbing with scotchbrite so as not to cause scratches) I found the seals fitted easily but firmly into the grooves after lubricating with the supplied grease. The piston was machined to a good standard with no rough or sharp areas and after lubricating with the grease fitted firmly taking strong thumb pressure to push it gently past the seals.
Good points: 1- well made 2- well packaged against corrosion 3- hydraulic grease supplied
Bad points: none!
Wishes:- in the caliper mounting bracket there are two rubber sleeves wich protect the mounting pin. Yamaha never made these parts available as a replacement item for some reason. It would be nice if the kit were to include these and thus make it a full caliper seal replacement kit.
