Honda CBR600 is 20
2007 marks the 20th anniversary of the legendary honda CBR600!
Over the last 20 years the machine has evolved from the do-it-all 80bhp, 140mph machine into the latest CBR600RR, with 118bhp and a top speed approaching 170mph!
Estimates put the number of CBR600s sold since 1987 at over 400,000, from the first CBR600FH to the latest CBR600RR-6!
The CBR600 means so much to so many riders, giving as it has a mixture of fun, excitement, practicality and utter dependability.
It hasn’t just been road-riders who’ve learned to depend on the CBR600, the machine has been as successful on the race track, too.
The CBR spawned its own race series – the CBR Cup – with such luminaries as Brian Morrison taking part – before taking on machinery from other manufacturers in the British Supersport series.
In the UK, the CBR has won nine titles since Phil Borley’s 1992 Supersport 600 championship win on the CBR600FN. Since the 2003 introduction of the ‘RR’ model the bike has cleaned up, winning two titles with Karl Harris, one with Leon Camier and this year’s with Cal Crutchlow.
In European and World competition, Ten Kate in Holland have dominated in recent years. With the onset of the dual F1/F-Sport model in 2001, honda’s intentions were clear – to win the World Supersport title. And win they did, with the talents of Ten Kate and Fabien Foret. Since then, the Ten Kate boys have dominated, with more titles coming with Chris Vermeulen, Karl Muggeridge and back-to-back title wins with Sebastien Charpentier.
Here’s to another 20 years of CBR greatness!
