The ‘Thunder Ace’ was the prequel to the R1. With 145 BHP and Yamaha’s five valve cylinder head, it was both fast and able to provide prodigious mid range torque. It had serious competition however with Suzuki’s GSXR 1000, which was both lighter, better handling and slightly quicker, although in real World riding terms, the 108 NM of torque made this a machine to be reckoned with.
