What is certain though is that in 1972, this double overhead camshaft engine gave in excess of 80bhp, ensuring a top speed of 135mph. Nothing before had come close, even the Italian MV Agusta!

The specification itself was straight off the racetrack. Never before had any manufacturer offered a four-cylinder double overhead camshaft machine to the masses, and never before had anybody had access to this type of performance.

Everyone new Kawasaki could make fast if fragile two strokes, but now they had produced and even faster four stroke, this time with bullet proof reliability and with those four exhausts, inspired styling, something in fairness Kawasaki were always good at.

The worlds most iconic motorcycle? Well no that would have to be the Honda CB750, but this runs it an awfully close second, and as far as performance goes, it has the Honda well and truly on the back foot!
