Subject: Oil question

Hi, I have '75 CB 550F and want to know what oil to use in the motor because now oil doesn't have ZDDP in it that is critical for tappet engines.

It is my understanding that motor oils have been formulated to 'meet or exceed' previous specification standards. I have run older bikes for some decades now and have never realized a problem using quality oils of suitable viscosity.

I use Shell Rotella 15W40 with good results. Automotive oils with the energy-saving logo should be avoided because friction reducers can cause clutch slippage.

I suggest you have a look at http://www.vfrworld.com/tex_vfr/tech/oil.htm

This is the most complete motorcycle oil and additive explanation I found.

SAE 10/40 is what you need, dont use synthetic or semi synthetic, you bike isnt designed to work with it!,

my 75 400f, even my 87 vt500e uses that
