Hello this is my first post here and last weekend i helped my parents friend move and got a FREE 1976 cb 550 . its been sitting since 2001. ive put about 75 dollars in it and i got it running, now here are the questions, when it starts and warms up then i shut it off its hard to start and when i turn the choke off it dies???? it will not start with the choke off. ive cleaned the carbs ive put sea foam in the gas lines and let them sit and the came with carb and choke cleaner until all the nasty stuff quit comming out. so why is it hard to start. ive changed the oil and the oil light is on until it starts??? do i just need to let it run for along time so it gets all the other stuff out of the motor??? and it does not idle. im confused ive never had a big bike before and dont know there to start. any help would be AWSOME!!!
Congratulations on your find! I just obtained a '76 CB550F myself, and it was not free!
You wrote that you cleaned the carbs, but it still sounds like you have dirty carbs. Have you done this type work before? Removing and cleaning carburetor jets is a touchy business as the passages are small, brass, and subject to damage or inadequate cleaning. (I have just purchased carb rebuild kits for my bike, as it has been sitting for several years. I have had it running, poorly, and have spent many hours in years past cleaning and re-cleaning old, dirty jets. Going to make quick work of this one!)
If you are committed to cleaning them, be certain to use material softer than brass such as nylon or fishing line, or copper wire, to clean the jets and fine passeges in the carb bodies. Pay close attention to the float seals and assure the floats move freely and are adjusted properly to prevent flooding.
