Subject: My First CB750 Question

I just bought a 1978 CB750K model and I was wondering if someone could tell me where I drain the transmission fluid so I can change it. I never owned a CB Honda before so I'll probably have many more questions for you guys. Thanks, Joe

Joe,

I own a 74 CB 750 K4 and the engine oil and transmission oil are one in the same. Under the right side cover is your oil tank. The older Honda 750s are unique like old Triumphs in that they use an oil scavenging system which I believe is one reason they can run for 300,000 miles if taken care of. With a warmed up engine removed the oil drain bolt from the oil tank (use a funnel), also take off the oil filler cap it allows the oil to flow better. Remove the engine oil drain bolt under the engine drain oil into a pan. Remove the oil filter housing and drain the old filter into the same pan. Hopefully you have a new filter? If you don't you can still change the oil, its just smarter to put in a clean filter. There is no seperate transmission and engine oil on a Honda 750, so when you change the engine oil, you are changing the transmission oil. Install a new filter and don't lose the small washer and spring! After draining the oil tank and engine reinstall the drain bolts. Now add new oil, I use 10-40 SAE. Add 2 quarts then start watching the dip stick from your oil tank. If you don't have one yet the next thing you should buy is a shop manual. $25-30 will save you from doing something wrong that can cost you alot more than $30 you invested in a manual. Good luck
