Hi all, I have a 1970 Honda CB450k3. It has been sitting for about 6 years (garaged). I recently got it running and registered. It ran great for about 20 miles, then it stopped running on the left cylinder. I limped it to a honda store where I put on new air filters (was going to do this anyway). When I started it up again it ran on both cylinders but very weakly on the left. I pulled off the left carb and checked in it (wasn't sure if it sucked up a piece of foam from the old air filter). It was clean so I pulled out the jets and cleaned them. I also pulled out the jets on the right side, they were much cleaner than the left.
Long story short it still isn't running right. It bogs down really bad, it won't idle, I can only go maybe 50 on the flat if I push it, and only about 5,500 rpm. It smells of gas (the left spark plug is wet).
I can do some simple stuff myself, but I'm no mechanic.
Does anyone have any great ideas, or does anyone know of any good mechanics that have a passion for working on these old bikes (I'm in the Los Angeles area).
Seems an ignition problem to me: the ignition points or coil is gone. To check this: unscrew a plug and hold it against the head (carefully! it is 15.000 volts!) while trying to start. If you see clear blue sparks, then the ignition is ok, if you don't, let the points get fixed of replace a (the) coil(s).
I had a 1974 CB450, that I had similar problem with.
I found that the breaker points lost the distance between them.
I was able to drive for a while and then it was running very poor and missfired.
Then I had to readjust the breaker points to get the proper distance.
My solution was to make a electronic ignition system without breaker points. It worked fine the rest of the years I owned it before I sold the bike.
