Final swansong for the CB500 Four, already stretched as a 550, now bore and stroke increased for the last time to make 627cc translating to 53bhp @ 8500 rpm, and with the curb weight now up to 213kg performance was hardly any better than the original CB500, although a new chassis and brakes was a definite step in the right direction.
The engine reliability was on the edge in this final stretched form and was de-tuned somewhat for subsequent custom models aimed at the US market, and was soon to be replaced with the superb new advanced 16 valve CBX550 which took over the mantle from this venerable old ‘CB Four’ single overhead cam engine that had done such sterling work over the previous decade
