Subject: Ignition

Here a question from the Netherlands:
How can I set the ignition on time? When I'm driving and I close the throttle, there comes a bang out of the pipes. It sounds great, but my Nighthawk '86 achieves less. Does anybody know what I can do about it, or where I can find it how to solve this problem?

With best regards,

A backfire is usually caused by an ignition when the exhaust valve is already opened. This cleans the hole & pipe, but it should ignite a little earlier so the full force of the ignition goes to piston motion instead of getting lost out of the exhaust. check your ignition timing, and your valves while your at it.  reply to this

It is new to hear the positive side, that the pipes become cleaner, and I assumed that the ignition has to be a little earlier so the full force of the ignition goes to piston motion instead of getting lost out of the exhaust. So I have to check the ignition timing of the motor, and the valves also. But is there a manual to do this?
Do I need special tools? Because I opened up the left crankcase cover, and than...?  reply to this
