Launched in 1961 the 305cc version of the C72 because of a superior power to weight ratio and more torque and power, now up to 23bhp, than the C71 variants, had the overwhelming sales advantage in that vital US market.

The push button starting, wet sump lubricated engine was both powerful and smooth, by ‘Harley’ and British Triumph Twin standard’s anyway, but most importantly this quiet clean motorcycle attracted a whole new customer base. People who would not normally consider riding a ‘Hog’ or loud 650 twin from Britain, where strength and endurance were required , would happily jump on a Honda, knowing their cleanly pressed ‘Chinos’ would not become splattered with oil! After all, as the Honda marketing slogan at the time stated ‘You meet the nicest people on a Honda’
