Following the success of the C71 in the all important North American market, an improved and re-styled model, called, logically enough, the C72 burst on to the scene in 1960.

Many revisions, including the change from dry to wet sump lubrication, more torque at lower revs and improved styling allowed sales of this model to really take off World wide. The CS72 was also launched in that year with those superbly stylish upswept exhaust pipes, and larger white walls on the tyre sides, then so popular in the USA.

When Honda America agreed to give one to Elvis Presley, a masterpiece of marketing, which Honda were to repeat with subsequent models, the CB77 ‘Super Hawk’ for ‘Roustabout’ in 1964 being a good example, sales of all Honda motorcycles hit a new high, and take overall market share in the USA at that time for the up to 350cc class.
